PLANNING YOUR PROJECT

A little planning goes a long way.

You do not need a finished mood board or a technical drawing to start a tiling enquiry. A clear picture of the room, and what you want to change, is enough to begin a useful conversation.

Start with the room, not just the tile.

Take a few photographs from different corners, including the doorways, existing floor, walls and any fittings that will stay. Close-ups help show cracked tiles or damaged surfaces, but wide views give the whole project context.

Approximate room dimensions are useful at this stage. If you are considering wall tiling, include the height you would like to tile and note any windows, alcoves or sloping ceilings.

Explain what is there now.

Is the floor timber or solid? Are old tiles coming up? Is the wall painted, plastered or already tiled? You may not know what lies underneath, and that is fine. Tell Dave what you can see and flag anything you are unsure about.

Preparation can be a significant part of the job. It is better to discuss the existing surface at the start than assume the work is only the visible tile layer.

Bring the other work into the conversation.

A bathroom may involve plumbing and electrical work. A kitchen may have new cabinets, worktops or appliances. A tiled floor may meet carpet, timber or an external door. Share the wider plan so the order of work and the responsibilities of each trade can be discussed.

If underfloor heating or a wet-room system is involved, keep the system details and supplier instructions available. The tile installation needs to be considered alongside the relevant specification.

If you have chosen a tile, share the details.

Send a product link or photograph of the label, together with the size, material and preferred laying pattern. A physical sample is useful when discussing colour and finish. If you have not chosen yet, a few reference photographs can help explain the look you like.

Finally, include your postcode, an outline of your preferred timing and the best way to reach you. Dave can then discuss the next step and what else is needed to agree the scope and quote.
